The CARE Center looks for avenues to foster a loving relationship among its elderly neighbors in order to improve the welfare and dignity of the people it serves. The Adopt a Grandparent will work to provide assistance to neighbors who are at least 55 years or older by matching them with a CARE Center volunteer or team of five or more volunteers who offer practical, emotional, and spiritual support. The individual volunteer or team would stay in place for a specified time period, during which the group would take care of basic needs of their adopted neighbor. Caring for an older adult can be rewarding and fulfilling, but can also place great physical and emotional demands of those who take care of them. The program’s support/services can come in a variety of ways to the older person or caregiver of the older person. PRACTICAL support may include transporta-tion, preparing or delivering meals, or helping with household chores such as house cleaning or yard work. EMOTIONAL support may include friendship expressed through phone calls, written note cards, visits and listening. Emotional support encourages coping strategies and promotes well-being for the adopted grandparent. SPIRITUAL support may include prayer, listen-ing without judgment to spiritual concerns, respecting personal beliefs, faith or spiritual journey.
The senior in need of assistance will be assessed before putting a volun-teer into their home environment. Volunteers will be required to allow the CARE Center to do an official background check before placing them in homes. While it is the purpose to develop one-on-one relationships between volunteers and adopted seniors, the Adopt a Grandparent Program will provide unique one time services to those in need. Adopt a Grandparent Program does not provide medical or personal care to the adopted senior nor does it provide financial assistance between the senior and volunteer. Training and support is given to the volunteers. Confidentiality is emphasized for both the senior and the volunteers. For more information, please contact
