Jobs For Life

JFLThe Jobs for Life class consists of 16 sessions and teaches timeless biblical principles concerning work and the ways those principles are applied in the marketplace.

The class takes the students on a journey – a journey to discover who they are, their unique value, and the principles they need to overcome roadblocks in their lives.  Centered on the Bible, the course covers lessons learned from the lives of characters such as Joseph, David, and Ruth, the teachings of Jesus’ parables, and examples of real world heroes.  In addition, the class equips the students with core work readiness skills such as presenting their 60 second commercial, developing a vocational plan, building a resume, learning effective interviewing skills, and many others.  The Jobs for Life course provides the foundation for the CARE Center to help our neighbors equip themselves with Biblical principles that will lead to more than just a job.

Pay It Forward

In the Bible, Jesus tells about a parable of a master entrusting talents to some of his servants. In this parable the master ends up rewarding the person who makes their talents or money grow. In the same vein, through the Jobs for Life Program, class participants are given money and they are asked to utilize the money in some way to help it grow for themselves or to help someone else. Since the program’s inception, the CARE Center has seen some unique ideas as people utilized their money from sales on Craig’s List, develop a recycling can program, help tornado victims, help a church, and other creative ventures.

One Jobs for Life participant was given $25.00 and he used the money to purchase art materials so that he could carve and create distinctive walking canes that he in turn would sale for a profit. His project was successful and everyone at the CARE Center was proud of his efforts. He was congratulated and applauded at graduation last summer. But, what the CARE Center did not expect was for this graduate to humbly come in six months later and give the CARE Center $100.00. You see, his walking canes are still selling and profits are still growing, and this individual wanted to pay his talents “forward” for current Jobs for Life participants.

Wow, what a concept. Pay it forward. If you are helped, help someone else. A simple act, a kind word, a grocery cart of food, diapers for a baby, or helping someone to achieve a job – all can be huge in the Kingdom of God. But, we can learn from the individual to – pay it forward.

Jobs for Life is a 16 week, Biblically based, course, sponsored by the CARE Center, that teaches class participants work related principles helping them with life skills in order to get and keep a job.
